U2 called in some impressive replacements for Bono

It was a case of with or without Bono last night, as U2 took to the stage for the World Aids Day (RED) Concert in New York’s Times Square.

The U2 frontman was unable to perform at the charity gig as he continues to recover after a cycling accident in November.

But fans of the Irish supergroup were not left disappointed as the Edge and co had rustled up some top notch replacements for their lead singer.

“The Boss” Bruce Springsteen and Coldplay’s Chris Martin filled Bono’s shoes for the evening, entertaining huge crowds alongside Adam Clayton, Larry Mullen Jr and the Edge.

Martin stormed on stage for the start of the band’s set and took on Bono’s role for Beautiful Day and With or Without You – wearing a T shirt branded “Substitu2”.

Born to Run hitmaker Springsteen then sang Where the Streets Have No Name and Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For with the band – named U2 Minus 1 for the night.

54-year old Bono sustained a facial fracture on his eye socket and fractures on his left shoulder blade, left arm and left hand in a cycling accident in Central Park.
