A stretch of road near a school and a playing field should be improved following an accident, according to a local councillor.

A recent road traffic accident involving a student crossing from St Eunan’s College to the playing field across the road has led Councillor Dessie Shields to submit a motion to Letterkenny Muncipal District Council.

The Council should replace the current pedestrian crossings with pelican or zebra crossings, install a new crossing just below the college gates beside College Row and erect additional speed warning signs, said Shiels.

“I am very familiar with the area as a former Glencar resident and also as a primary student in Scoil Colmcille and also as a secondary student in St Eunan’s College. The area is well built up residentially with normal residential and through flow traffic,” he said.

“It also serves 4 schools in total, 2 of which are secondary and 2 of which are national schools: St Eunans College, Scoil Colmcille, Scoil Mhuire Gan Smal and Loretto Convent below. This means that there are large numbers of schoolchildren in the area on a daily basis attending school together with their parents making drop off and collection trips,” he continued.
