Tallaght-DundalkIt was a breathless finish – but perhaps not the breathless finish anybody expected.

There was a sense of inevitability – though also understandable relief – when substitute Robbie Benson pounced on a stray pass from BATE Borisov defender Yurk Kendysh and placed the ball calmly past Sergei Veremko in the 90th minute.

Not that such a mood could be detected in the 5,000-strong home support, the most vocal of whom has been reduced to silence as the parlous one-goal cushion persisted into the closing stages.

The reasonable expectation, when David McMillan headed his second goal to put Dundalk in the lead for the first time in the tie, was that the Lilywhites would endure a barrage for the remaining half-hour.

While Gary Rogers had to make a couple of routine saves to his near post, the BATE backlash never materialised, and that was largely down to the calmness and composure of the Dundalk side as they strangled the Belarusian’s attacking options and created chances of their own.
